Advent with the Jesus Storybook Bible

We give our children the Jesus Storybook Bible when they enter Kindergarten.  Written by Sally Lloyd-Jones and beautifully illustrated by Jago, we love this bible because "at the center of the Story is a baby, the child upon whom everything will depend. Every story whispers his name. From Noah to Moses to the great King David---every story points to him. He is like the missing piece in a puzzle---the piece that makes all the other pieces fit together. From the Old Testament through the New Testament, as the Story unfolds, children will pick up the clues and piece together the puzzle. A Bible like no other, The Jesus Storybook Bible invites children to join in the greatest of all adventures, to discover for themselves that Jesus is at the center of God's great story of salvation---and at the center of their Story too."

Another unique feature of this bible is that there are 24 stories from the beginning of the book through the birth of Jesus, perfect for Advent preparation!! We encourage our families (anyone, really) to use this as an Advent devotional.  You can find the calendar by following this link.

Don't have the book? Don't worry!  Every day of Advent we will post a video version of the day's story here on the blog.

Our Kids, Creating

This week we are talking about how we can use our God-given imaginations to figure things out.  As an imagination warm-up, the kids each decorated a craft stick, which Emily S. made into this:
“For we are God’s handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do.” Ephesians 2:10

What's Happenin' in Girls in Action

Our GAs have been very active so far this year, already earning two badges. They made GA pins to show their GA Pride to earn "I Am a GA," and with the help of the RAs, they folded 100 Operation Christmas Child Shoeboxes to earn "I Serve My Church."  Our next project is a fundraiser for Pure Water, Pure Love, a ministry of WMU.  The girls will be placing a fish bowl outside the sanctuary by the fire place.  We are asking church members to drop their spare change into the fish bowl to help us purchase water filters for SE Asia and other countries where clean drinking water is a scarcity.  (Don't worry-we will have a dry place for paper money, too!)
From  "The primary goal of PWPL is to provide missionaries with water filters and the people they serve with wells that offer clean water, free from disease-causing microorganisms. With the help of hundreds of churches, PWPL provides thousands of water filters to missionary families and helps fund clean water projects."  Please support our "I Do Missions" project by looking for our fish bowl starting Sunday,  October 5th.  Thank you for supporting our girls as they learn to live a missions lifestyle.

Singing As We Go

On Wednesdays at 6 p.m.. our graded children's and preschool choirs continue to learn and sing songs based on our theme, "Living in the Light."  On Sunday, October 5 our Young Musicians Choir (grades 3-5) will sing the opening song for our 11 a.m. service.

We will begin work this week on our Christmas musical Light of the World to be presented by the combined Music Makers and Young Musicians Choirs (grades 1-5) on Sunday, December 7 at 4:30 p.m. in our sanctuary.  The musical has several opportunities for speaking parts and solos.  Our Melody Makers (PreK-Kindergarten) will also be singing that afternoon to open up our program and our children's handbells will play a couple of tunes as well.

Please remember to begin the check-in process by 5:45 p.m. on Wednesdays so everyone can be on time for choir.  Our choir time is shorter this year, so every minute counts!

Encounter 9:40

Looking for something new on Sundays?  Come check out our new Encounter service, 9:40 on Sunday mornings.  At Encounter, for our adults and teens, we are creating an informal, experiential, thoughtful and passionate place to connect with each other and together to come into the presence of God.

The first unit will be from the book of Ezekiel, and will be taught by several of our ministers. What happens when life doesn't work out the way you planned? Who's responsible?  Where is God in all of this?

If you have ever asked those questions (and let's face it, who hasn't?), then come Sunday morning to hear more.

Also at 9:40 we are launching EncounterKids, the center of our Children's Ministry.  At EncounterKids we are leading kids to see how God's word fits into their lives, to learn how talk to Him, and to build friendships that will last.  This week we are learning about Respect.  Click on the link under "What's Happening" to find out more!

Don't miss it!

Hooray Abbey and Darla!!

Today we celebrated with Abbey, Darla, and their families as they followed Christ's example in baptism.  Each of them was presented with an Ebenezer Stone and a card to mark the occasion.

"In Matthew 3:13-17, Mark 1:9-11, and Luke 3:21-22 we are told of Jesus’ baptism. Today, in front of your family, friends, and church, you proclaimed, “Jesus is Lord,” and you were baptized following His
example.  As you went under the water the pastor said the words,
“Buried in the likeness of Jesus’ death, raised to walk in a new way of life.”  Your baptism marks the beginning of a lifelong journey of discipleship —  allowing Jesus to be the Lord of everything that you do and say, being obedient to His commands, seeking to follow His will every day,
and becoming more and more like Him."

We are so proud of you, Darla and Abbey!  We love walking with you as you learn to walk with Him.

Say Y-E-S to VBS!

We still need Small Group Leaders for 2nd, 3rd, and 5th grade!  We take all volunteers, even those that can only work a few days!

Q: What does a Small Group Leader do?
A: The Best Job EVER!  You take your Small Group of students around to all their classes. Discover, Decide, and learn to Defend right along side the kids!

Q: What do I need to do to prepare?
A: Pray!  Other than that, nothing!  Show up on July 14th with a willing heart and see how God uses you in the life of a child.

Q: Will I be alone with the kids?
A: No!  There are two adults with every small group, plus the teachers in each of the classes.

It takes lots of adults to create a powerful VBS experience for kids, so check your calendars for July 14th-18th and let Myra, Emily, or the church office know if you are willing!

Got a kid coming to VBS?  Click here to sign them up!

Ebenezer Stones

One of the most important goals of KidConnect is to help parents be the leaders in connecting their children to Christ.  We believe that recognizing milestones is an important way to give kids a personal history of faith.  It is because of this that we are starting the Ebenezer Stones project.

During our baby dedication this Sunday, Anna was presented with an Ebenezer Stone jar and her very first stone, memorializing the day her family and her church promised to teach her about Jesus.  As Anna grows, her parents will help her add more stones to her jar to help her develop a narrative of her walk with the Lord.  What a beautiful illustration of the way the Lord calls children to himself!

When our Children's Ministry is a part of a significant spiritual experience in a child's life, we will present stones to help mark those moments: baby dedications, baptisms, Vacation Bible School, family mission trips, transition to middle school, any event that carries spiritual significance for a child.

Interested in starting an Ebenezer jar for your child, or for yourself?  Click on the tab above for more information about the Ebenezer Stone project, and start collecting stones!

April Life App and SideStreet Schedule

This Month's Life App in Children's Ministry is Humility- putting others first by giving up what you think you deserve.

“Don’t do anything only to get ahead. Don’t do it because you are proud. Instead, be free of pride. Think of others as better than yourselves,” Philippians 2:3, NIrV.

Week One’s Bible story, Jesus serves His disciples by washing their feet (John 13:1-17). Our Bottom Line is: I can put others first by serving them.

Week Two’s Bible story, Peter wanted to take action and fight in the garden, but he didn’t wait to consider what Jesus wanted (John 18:1-11). Our Bottom Line is: I can put others first by giving up what I want.

Week Three's Bible story, Jesus humbled Himself and became obedient to death on a cross (John 18:12 – 20:23). Our Bottom Line is: I should put others first because Jesus put others first.

Week Four’s Bible story, Jesus doesn’t have to forgive Peter, but chooses to make things right and restore His relationship with Peter (John 21:1-19). Our Bottom Line is: I can put others first by making things right.

Please Note the following SideStreet schedule Due to Spring Break and Easter celebrations:

April 13th Palm Sunday NO SideStreet due to choir performance
April 20th Easter SideStreet
April 27th NO SideStreet end of Spring break
